Skin Concern – Eyes

We have all heard the saying that the eyes are the windows to the soul (or something to that effect) so it’s natural to want to take care of them, but how?

As a licensed and certified medical aesthetician, I am here to help you take better care of your eye area with simple tips and tricks and also provide some recommendations for professional treatments.

One thing that I have to make very clear right away is always make sure which ever product, tool or treatment you use (receive) please make sure that it is specifically for the eye area and not for the face and/or body. This is extremely important and I will explain why below. Just remember this tip in the future!

Why Eyes Matter

Our eyes do so much for us, they allow us to see beauty in everyday life, they show our emotion and capture memories for us on the daily. Eye care is essential for overall health (obviously seeing a doctor and optometrist is extremely vital, I’m speaking to skin care) It is important for us to nourish and spoil our eye area like we do the rest of our face and body.

Eye Concerns

In my personal experience, I have always been self-conscience about my eye area. I always feel like I have racoon eyes (though many people have told me I don’t but we are our own worse critics) dark circles have always been my enemy. I have come across many eye creams, tools and tricks to help reduce dark circles, puffiness and fine lines; and truthfully, with consistency, they do work.

Professional Treatments

One thing to remember is the skin around the eyes is very different that the skin around your face and body; the skin is thinner therefore it needs specific care and products. While there are not a lot of treatments specifically for the eyes, the ones that are approved for the eyes are effective. Please note that I am not a medical doctor so I cannot speak to treatments performed by doctors and nurses such as Botox and fillers; I can only speak to treatments that I can provide and perform. One of my favourite treatments (as some of my clients know) is the Green Peel from Dr. Schrammek, it is the only peel that is approved for treatment on the eye lids and around the eyes safely and effectively. The Green Peel assists with reducing fine lines and wrinkles, reducing pigmentation and dark circles. The unique combination of herbs and proprietary mixtures, the Green Peel allows blood flow to the area to smoothen out and exfoliate the skin. The results are healthy glowing skin, I absolutely love this treatment.

Skin Care For The Eyes

One of the most important things in skin care is hydration, this is true of the skin around the eyes. Personally, I believe the use of eye cream cannot start soon enough, the earlier you start, the better. Finding a suitable eye cream can be a challenge but it all depends on what the concern is, what the skin needs and what the desired result is. If your concern is dark circles, you need a hydrating and brightening eye cream and you will need to apply it twice a day to achieve the desired results of reducing dark circles. If your concern is puffy eyes, you will need a hydrating eye cream preferably one that is gel based and lightweight. This allows for the skin to stay hydrated and circulate blood flow to the area to reduce puffiness, it’s also best to apply twice a day to get the results faster. If your concern is antiaging, the best solution is two things, one a brightening eye cream for the day and a retinol-based eye cream for the night. Retinol is number one for antiaging, pigmentation and exfoliation but make sure that any retinol that is used is specific for the eye area, anything for the face will be too potent for the eye area.

Tools For The Eyes

There are a number of tools that can be used for the eyes, the three big ones that I am fans of are our fingers, facial roller and a gua sha. Using our fingers to apply eye cream is essential, the proper way to apply eye cream is to gently tap it into the skin, this allows the product to penetrate into the skin instead of swiping it off in a sliding motion. Facial rollers and gua shas are great tools for product penetration as well as massaging the skin around the eye area. One pro tip that I will share with you is to keep your facial rollers and gua shas in the fridge, by having the tools cool/cold it helps with lymphatic massage, reduce puffiness, reduce dark circles and improves the texture of the skin. Another at home treatment that is great is eye mask. Generally eye masks are for hydrating and brightening the eye area but can also be very calming and relaxing not just for the skin, but for the mind as well.

Now that you know a bit more about eye care in skin care, I hope that you can put these into practice and see how much your skin will improve.
